"I worked with a young person who suffered emotional trauma. Her goal was to connect with nature, so we made weekly trips to the park. Walking in the breeze and observing the environment helped her open up and feel good about herself. Giving her space to express herself without pressure was key."
"When working with waterways, I introduce myself to the land and its spirits. Following these cultural protocols grounds the work we do and teaches young people to respect traditions."
"I also take young people to the river—it’s a calming and grounding experience. Standing barefoot by the water, especially on calm days, helps them reflect and reconnect when life feels chaotic. It’s a simple but powerful form of self-care."
"I’ve taken clients fishing, bushwalking, or even to visit family. For some, reconnecting with family is their first step towards building their identity. Recently, we’ve had clients who wanted to fly up north to spend time with family. We supported these trips, and they came back feeling refreshed and happy. Simple activities like fishing or art provide meaningful connections and build trust."
The Home Stretch WA – Community of Practice would like to Acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we use. We would like to pay our respects to our Elders past, present and emerging. We are privileged to be a part of the longest living culture in the world.
